The Comparison of the Antibiotics Usage and the Resistance Pattern in Intensive Care Unit between 1996 and 1999

Abstract
A retrospective study was performed on 70 patients of 1996 and 56 patients of 1999, who were tested for antibiotics susceptibility and taking antibiotics for 3 continuous days in the intensive care unit(ICU) of E University Hospital. The overall microorganisms isolated for 1996 and 1999 were Staphylococcus aureus(23.6%:23.3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(16.6%:11%), Candida albicans(9%:8%), Escherichia coli(5.5%:3%), and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus(4%:17.8%). The incidence of infection in 1996 and 1999 were 61.3% and 49% respectively for respiratory infection, 7.5% and 19% respectively for UTI, 11% and 8.6% respectively for bacteremia, and 7% and 5% respectively for wound infection. The microorganisms which caused respiratory infection for 1996 and 1999 were Pseudomonas aeruginosa(22.1%:16.3%), Staphylococcus aureus(21.3%:27.9%), Candida albicans(10.7%:7%) and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus(4.1%:22.1%). The microorganisms causing UTI in 1996 and 1999 were Candida albicans(26.7%:12.9%), Escherichia coli(26.7%:9.6%) and Candida tropicalis(13.3%:38.7%). The microorganisms causing bacteremia in 1996 and 1999 were Staphylococcus aureus(37.8%:35.7%), Staphylococcus epidermidis(18.1%:14.3%), and Candida albicans(4.5%:14.3%). The microorganisms causing wound infection in 1996 and 1999 were Staphylococcus aureus(42.9%:20%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(14.3%:20%), and Staphylococcus epidermidis(14.3%:20%). The type of antibiotics used were similar in both groups in that the third class cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones were used the most. The comparison of the antibiotics usage were 40.2% and 38% in 1996 and 1999 for appropriateness, 26.6% and 26.3% in 1996 and 1999 for inappropriateness. The cases in which a cheaper antibiotic could have been used were 38.8% in 1996, and 43.5% in 1999.
